British Council
Project English Language Learning
Year 2017

I led a team in creating a new English Language Learning platform for the British Council. The platform uniquely focused on incorporating British Arts and Culture, such as arts, music, fashion, and film, known to be popular among non-English speakers.

We designed modular audio, video, and written content interactives within an eLearning platform. Users could engage with content normally or activate an interactive 'learning' mode. This mode integrated dynamic language-focused questions seamlessly into the content flow, utilising real-time subtitles, video interstitials, and post-content quizzes. These interactive modules explored various learning methods like associative learning, spaced repetition, and memory recall.

BBC Discovery Project
Project BBC - Pocket Pundit Video Tools
Year 2017

The project originated from a winning idea at BBC Connected Studios aimed at enhancing live sporting broadcasts for digitally-focused sports fans. The concept emerged from the question: "What if we could allow viewers to pause live streams, or capture moments, and give them the tools to become their own sports pundits?"

As the product designer on a small team, we set out to turn this idea into reality. We developed a proof of concept that garnered funding from the BBC Sports & BBC Digital Content departments. Our goal was to create a pilot extension that seamlessly integrated into the existing iPlayer toolkit. This extension, activated during strategic broadcasts of the Six Nations Rugby, allowed viewers to capture 30-second video segments that could be edited or annotated using a range of drawing and annotation tools. These snippets of video could then be shared across social media channels, providing valuable data and insights into the most paused, replayed, commented, and shared moments from each sporting event.

While the proof of concept showed promise, we encountered challenges with content moderation that hindered further investment from the BBC. Despite this setback, we remained determined to explore the potential applications of the live video annotation tool in other markets. We designed versions tailored to alternative video streams, including Sky Sports (punditry tools), AMC & Netflix (cinematography and blunder tools), and IGN (video game tactics, guides, and hints).
